Program Overview

The SEOPW CRA authorized a major $2,225,000 capital grant to fund the comprehensive, ground-up development of Harlem Square, a premier multi-story cultural venue designed to revive a legendary historic site. The modern development transforms the historic property that once served as the home of Clyde Killens, the iconic mid-century photographer, entertainment impresario, and music promoter who helped shape Miami's cultural landscape. Architecturally structured as a high-end three-story destination, the complex features a distinct entertainment concept on each level. The first floor houses an intimate, upscale jazz lounge, the second floor features a sophisticated cigar bar, and the third floor opens up into an expansive rooftop lounge custom-built to host special events, private receptions, and public community gatherings.

Community Impact

This project acts as a vital commercial cornerstone within the Historic Overtown Culture and Entertainment District, directly advancing the CRA's master plan to reclaim the neighborhood’s legacy as the "Harlem of the South." The original Harlem Square Club was a legendary fixture of the historic Chitlin' Circuit, famously hosting industry giants like Sam Cooke, B.B. King, and Aretha Franklin during the era of segregation. By structurally resurrecting this historic mainstay, the project enlivens the NW 11th Street corridor, draws affluent heritage tourism, and creates a wealth of permanent hospitality and management jobs for local residents. The reimagined venue successfully bridges Overtown’s historic nightlife roots with modern economic development, providing an elegant platform for contemporary musicians and local entrepreneurs to thrive.
