Program Overview

The SEOPW CRA Board of Commissioners approved a $150,000 grant to the Black Archives History and Research Foundation of South Florida to spearhead the comprehensive structural restoration of the historic D.A. Dorsey House. This frame-vernacular residential landmark was originally constructed around 1913 and owned by Dana A. Dorsey, one of Miami’s most impactful pioneers, philanthropists, and the city’s first Black millionaire. To reverse decades of decay and preserve the building's physical integrity, the CRA investment directly funded critical infrastructure repairs and renovations, which included replacing the damaged hip roof, installing period-accurate windows, and restoring the original shiplap exterior siding.

Community Impact

Following the successful completion of the restoration, the historic property officially opened its doors to the public as a permanent museum and cultural exhibition site. Dana A. Dorsey was a visionary who built a massive real estate empire during segregation, helped organize South Florida’s first Black-owned bank, and donated vast parcels of land for local schools, parks, and libraries. By preserving his primary residence, the SEOPW CRA and the Black Archives have created an active educational monument that celebrates Black resilience, wealth, and civic leadership. The museum anchors local heritage tourism, hosts community art and history exhibits, and stands as an inspiring testament to Overtown’s rich cultural legacy.
