SEOPW CRA Announces Transformative Beautification Initiative to Revitalize 9th Street Pedestrian Mall

The Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (SEOPW CRA) proudly announced a transformative beautification project designed to revitalize the historic neighborhood and attract visitors to the once-blighted area. As part of its signature revitalization efforts, the SEOPW CRA is spearheading the redevelopment of the 9th Street Pedestrian Mall, with landscape architecture services provided by renowned Hood Design Studio, Inc.
This redevelopment project aligns with the SEOPW CRA’s long-term commitment to improving the quality of life for residents. A key aspect of this effort is placemaking—transforming public spaces into places that promote well-being, community connection, and a sense of belonging. The SEOPW CRA intends to allocate $15 million for the project, which is poised to bring new energy to the area and foster a stronger connection among residents. Through thoughtful design, it will create an environment that invites residents and visitors to engage with Historic Overtown’s cultural heritage.
On Thursday, March 20th, the SEOPW CRA hosted a community meeting inviting residents, business owners, and other stakeholders to review and provide feedback on the proposed designs. The event featured words from James D. McQueen, Executive Director of the SEOPW CRA, and a presentation from the Hood Design Studio design team. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Keon Hardemon and City of Miami Commissioner/SEOPW CRA Chairwoman Christine King, both of whom represent Historic Overtown, were in attendance to engage with the community, share their thoughts on the vision for the space, and discuss the anticipated challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
The proposed 9th Street Pedestrian Mall design includes lush landscaping, public art installations, and a dynamic “third space” to foster community participation. This newly reimagined space will serve as a gathering place for events, markets, and everyday activities such as reading, walking, and informal gatherings, encouraging social interaction and neighborhood engagement.
“The redevelopment of the 9th Street pedestrian mall is more than just a beautification project – it’s an investment in the future of this community,” said McQueen. “We are excited to see the vision come to life and to watch this space transform into a must-see destination.”
With an emphasis on connectivity and cultural engagement, the SEOPW CRA’s beautification initiative is set to help enhance the neighborhood for future generations.
